Maybe they aren't very realistic, but I'm not sure that's the point of them.

I liked hero stories growing up. It was nice to imagine someone able to make everything right again and rescue people.

[Unrealistic ultimately, but books were a comfort to the children at the orphanage, not a cure.]

But the underwear situation needs to stop. I'm starting to worry about doing laundry.

I see... I didn't have much of a childhood, you know, and so I never was able to read stories like that. Fairy tales or fantasy tales of these "heroes" that save the day... To me, I can't understand the interest in something so far fetched.

But I agree that it needs to stop, of course.

I think the whole point is it's a fantasy, but it's one we want anyway.

A lot of the kids at the orphanage liked to imagine someone like a hero coming to take them away. There was no real harm in it, I think.

[Hmmm...]

It's probably a pervert, but I don't know how we'd catch them. A stakeout wouldn't work unless we know where they are.

On the other hand, I do believe it's damaging. I'm sure you know it yourself, don't you? The harshness of reality. Not every orphan is adopted, and not every orphan who's adopted goes to a home that's loving. Living off of fairy tales only worsens that cold hard truth.

In any case, I don't have the body or ability to chase down any perverts, unfortunately. It might reflect my image poorly if I'm caught out in the streets at night, as well.

[Oh Eichi....]

...Eichi-kun, I hate to tell you this, but by the time you've learned to read or write, you've already learned that truth. I think everyone knew the reality.

Stories are important because they offer an escape from the truth.

[But this was probably unpleasant to read for people, wasn't it? It was better to change the topic.]

So you're just fine with letting someone keep your underwear, then?

I'm telling you that it's difficult to understand that. I was never given that "false hope" so I simply lived believing that I would die very soon. The world is a cruel place, and I knew that from the start.

Well, but I don't truly understand what parental love is in that way, either, since my parents only care for me as their precious heir.

In any case, they can keep it. They already have it, so I'd rather not know any more about what they do with it.
