NAME: Arjuna.
CANON: Fate/ franchise.
CANON POINT: During the Lostbelt Arc. Before his second interlude, however.
AGE: Over three thousand, maybe. His appearance is of an early twenties young adult.
BACKGROUND: Arjuna's wikipedia page should do the trick. However, despite the fact Arjuna originates from the Hindu epic The Mahabharata, his Fate/ counterpart's backstory may deviate in a few places - nothing too big that should be necessary to point out. They are things that will be better shaped out in the following personality section.
PERSONALITY: The son of the human princess Kunti and the God of the Heavens and Thunder Indra, though third prince of the Pandavas, Arjuna is the hero and hope of his people, and even of India itself. Seemingly perfect, flawless and faultless, he is everything a hero should be, always willing to live up to the expectations of others to a T and consequently, being cherished, admired, and often put on a pedestal. He is loved by all, and returns that love to the best of his ability. He is the pride and joy of Indraprastha.
Even at a young age, Arjuna has been someone with outstanding talent, the favored student of Guru Drona, a prodigy like no other. He is a good son, an impeccable student, a considerate brother, a lovable husband. Throughout his entire life, he has been regarded with high respect, hardly baseless, and quite well-deserving, for Arjuna is a dependable individual who never hesitates to make a decision, and is equally never wrong about them.
Together with his polite and rather formal way of speaking, he presents himself as nothing short of perfectly composed and calm, for it would be unbecoming of a hero to lose his composure in the face of hardships. If presented at danger, Arjuna demonstrates a rational mind befitting of calming, and even reassuring those around him. After all, it is not only his demeanor that is flawless, but his abilities and prowess as well. He is the Hero of Fortune, after all, the Awarded Hero, who is gifted much of everything, weapons capable of destroying the Universe itself, and he is properly responsible and reasonable to avoid its misuse (going as far as applying a "ban" on his Noble Phantasm, due to the magnitude of its destructive power).
Arjuna shows great confidence in his abilities and skills both in the way he presents himself in the battlefield, not fearing for his adversary's strength (rather, at times he may even praise it himself), for he knows the weight and value of his own prowess (often by voicing, in a subtly condescending way, how the battle is meaningless - for his power far overcomes his opponent's), as well as the way he is vain and perhaps even a bit of a show-off in his manner of speaking, reassuring often his Master that his "greatness" is easily recognized, or going as far as "testing" their leadership abilities in the way they're able to use Arjuna as a weapon, not wasting a second before voicing the sheer power of his weapons and skills, reassuring his Master that they might as well "proudly boast of him as the mightiest Servant of all". Seriously.
His words, to anyone who doesn't know how truly powerful Arjuna can be, might likely come off as arrogant - something rather unsuitable of a hero, of course, something that would be wrong to call him. If anything, he is only modest, for any other way to describe his abilities would be a lie, and heroes should not lie. He is the third prince of the Pandavas, the son of the God of the Heavens, a Kshatriya at birth, and the Servant of Ritsuka Fujimaru, first and foremost. He embraces his pride as a warrior as well as his duty as a Servant, to which he says that way, he is "able to be loyal to his convictions as a warrior without sacrificing his pride". Since birth he has been doing his utmost best to fulfill the expectations laid out to him, to be the perfect image of a hero... -
But as flawless Arjuna tries to present himself, as faultless as that image of himself is, even Arjuna falls victim of being human. Even he, through all of his greatness and pride and caste and prowess, fails to be as perfect as he wished he could be.
It is something hinted to have existed since his childhood. Feelings of malice, ill-intended thoughts that are utterly unbecoming of what a hero should be, from the pettiest envy and jealousy at the possibility of another being a better archer than him, to downright grudges and sheer hatred, both at others and at himself - especially at himself -, for their own seemingly unimpaired, pristine perfection. Despite its origins being unknown (though perfectly understandable, for Arjuna is only human, as much of a God's blood he may have in his veins), its intensity has grown far out of proportion due to the existence of one he has come to call his eternal rival.
A Sudra at birth, hated by most, feared by all, with his golden flesh-armor and white skin tainted black. Karna is the perfect opposite of Arjuna, someone who was given nothing at all throughout his life, not once cherished or loved, not once treasured or glorified, and yet never once bearing an ounce of hatred, grudge, envy and jealousy towards another. Not once cursing his life, his existence, those people who would shame him in public. Karna, who hardly seems to be flawless, for he is, unlike Arjuna, without any flaws at all.
At face with one so unlike him, with far more reasons to be the bearer of those disgusting, wrecked, twisted feelings, Arjuna's self-doubt towards his position as a hero and self-loathing for not being able to meet people's expectations of him perfectly swallowed him into a spiral of obsession and hatred that would only set him free of this nightmare if Karna met his death. It's something he has focused on throughout all of his life, and even post it, for even as Servants he seeks out to fight Karna over and over and over, if it means getting rid of these feelings that do not but make him utterly sick of himself - to the point that, despite his speech and his duties as a hero, a warrior and a Heroic Spirit, he'd be willing to side with the enemy camp if it means being Karna's rival, abandoning with so much ease his duties and morals.
Even then, however, he is not freed from his guilt and regrets that were born the moment Arjuna's arrow pierced through Karna's neck. Those feelings, instead, grew unforgivably heavy that even as Arjuna is summoned as a Servant, he brings with himself the very arrow that slayed Karna - his one regret. From the way he achieved victory is a way unbefitting for one of his caste, when Karna had no means of defending himself, to the very fact he had killed the only person in the world who understood him at all, he confesses that the moment he fired that arrow, he came to harbor a lifetime of regret.
All of those predicaments and negative feelings are hidden under several layers inside his heart, a "second personality" of Arjuna named "Black", or "Krishna". He is the one who willingly embraces all of Arjuna's wicked thoughts, protects him from the weight of his guilt and feelings unbecoming of a hero, someone who isn't the least afraid of straying from his path as a warrior. To say that "Krishna" might as well be some sort of defense mechanism Arjuna created in order to be able to show his face to others without being crushed by all that regret and self-hatred is hardly wrong. He goes as far as even blame "Krishna" for his own sins, insinuating that "he" goaded him into firing the arrow that killed his own rival. Even then, he knows well these are only excuses, and the one who willingly fired that arrow was...
Due to this darkness inside of his heart, Arjuna is always at an arm-length of people, maintaining his distance mentally and emotionally. He is not keen of forming bonds with people, merely preferring to be acquainted with them. He is nigh obsessed with hiding away that darkness, his true self, as seen as he is easy to panic and lose that perfect composure the moment that wicked side of his comes to surface. But even then, however, the very second someone catches even the smallest glimpse of his true nature, or if they have come even close of it, how unfortunate it is, for Arjuna's inner consciousness then seeks out to kill them. After all, no one, not even a single person must know how absolutely shameful Arjuna, the hero and third prince of Pandavas, truly is.
It ties perfectly, in the end, to his own wish for the Grail. "Eternal solitude", away from people's expectations of him, away from the possibility of having his true self revealed to the world, away from the everlasting guilt, regret and hatred he holds towards himself. He himself admits that he feels at ease when he is alone, but such a sentiment isn't fitting for a hero. If for once he could live as Arjuna, and not the "hero" Arjuna, if for once he could accept the evil inside of him as part of him, perhaps... Arjuna would be finally able to find inner peace.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Arjuna is what you'd call a Heroic Spirit within the Type-Moon universe. Heroic Spirits are basically shadows/mirrors of their true selves, who they were in life. Their bodies are sustained by magical energy (mana), both given by the Holy Grail itself, and the Master who has summoned them. The true potential of their abilities are unleashed only if their Master is a capable, talented magus, and they have enough mana to provide their Servant. They are assigned six parameters, ranked from E to EX, that basically designates how stupid OP they are. Let it be noted that, even at rank E, Heroic Spirits are still much stronger than normal humans.
Before going into specific skills, it's worth mentioning Servants are able to dematerialize into spirit form; which just really means they can go invisible and pass through walls and shit. Their presence is no longer detectable, even by magi, or their own Masters. Only someone with really high magic aptitude is able to detect a Servant in spirit form. They can't speak either, unless it's through telepathy with their Master.
CLASS SKILLS ▉
MAGIC RESISTANCE (C): As the name itself says, it's the ability to resist magic, be it in the form of spells, curses, among others. It is, however, limited to spells with a chant that is two verses or below, or rank lower than Arjuna's Magic Resistance rank (C).
INDEPENDENT ACTION (A): As mentioned previously, Servants are beings sustained by magical energy, provided first and foremost by their Master. However, Independent Action is a skill that allows the user to sustain its materialization by the means of their own reserve of mana, without the need of a Master. It, however, limits the use of their abilities greatly; the more their skills are used, the more mana it's required, lessening the time of which they are able to remain materialized. Their Noble Phantasm is completely out of commission, though. Too much mana. At rank A, Arjuna is able to exist without a Master for an entire week.
DIVINITY (B): As a demi-God, the son of the God of Thunder Indra, Arjuna's Divinity is ranked B. It is basically a skill to measure whether one has Divine Spirit aptitude or not. In general it's a very specific skill, which both protects the Servant from specific skills, allows them to break through others, and equally makes them vulnerable to a few. Half the time it's useless.
PERSONAL SKILLS ▉
CLAIRVOYANCE (C+): While Clairvoyance is known as a skill to predict the future, at rank C+, it really just blesses Arjuna with one hell of a sight. As a Servant of the Archer class as well, he is able to capture distant targets, and improves his dynamic vision. He basically can read that one sign in the other side of the city like a motherfucker. By concentrating at the time of shooting his arrows, too, Arjuna can manipulate his own "sense of time". He is able to shoot perfectly what he is aiming at at ease, a feat worthy of one such as himself.
FORTUNATE HERO (A): The great hero Arjuna was born to be loved by everyone, and sometimes he would be given the necessary things he requires from anyone. Short and straight, Arjuna is awarded anything he might come to need at any time, wherever he is, quite like a blessing. Truly the Hero of Fortune.
MANA BURST - FLAMES (A): A skill granted to him by his Noble Phantasm Agni Gandiva, it allows Arjuna to convert his mana into, well, bursts of energy that take the form of blue flames. Generally it can be use to quite a few things, but Arjuna, as an Archer, focuses on using it to accelerate the speed of his arrows. With the addiction of this skill, Arjuna's arrows reach his enemies faster than a fired rifle bullet. Disgustingly OP. An animated representation of this skill can be found here, up to 0:32 seconds.
NOBLE PHANTASMS ▉
PASHUPATA - RAISED HAND OF THE DESTRUCTION GOD: A weapon of mass-destruction granted to him by Lord Shiva, the God of Destruction. In myth, it literally obliterates the entire Universe. Thanks Shiva. However, it is... somewhat more nerfed in Fate/, thankfully. Arjuna's Noble Phantasm takes shape of judgment, in a way. It exterminates all humans in its surroundings, while conducting a "check" towards the enemies within its range one by one, allowing one to attain "Moksha" should they fail the check. What's Moksha, you ask? Well. It's nothing more nothing less than straight up instant-death. Its "check" is composed of identifying those who are of Divine origins - the higher one's Divinity rank is, the greater is the probability of them attaining Moksha, or being insta-killed. Towards plain, ordinary humans, it only causes them great damage. An animated representation of this Noble Phantasm can be found here.
AGNI GANDIVA - ROAR OF THE FLAME GOD: This Noble Phantasm takes shape of Arjuna's bow. A gift from the God of Fire Agni, it's a bow of flames that cannot be handled by humans. While generally an ordinary bow, by invoking its True Name, it changes the arrows into missiles coiled around with flames. Since Arjuna was blessed in life with an outstanding talent for archery, his arrows have a precision almost equivalent to a homing missile.
In regards to nerfs... er. Hand gestures. If needed, I'd be willing to nerf most of his abilities. His Noble Phantasm, Pashupata, for sure. However, as mentioned previously, without a Master to provide him magical energy, Arjuna is naturally nerfed to a high degree. And, again, his true strength may only come out if he's contracted to a Master of outstanding caliber. I'm pretty much going to write him under the influence of his Independent Action skill, only extended to... until he can find a Master, that is. Which means his Noble Phantasms, Pashupata, and the true strength of Gandiva, are both banned and limited, respectively. If anything needs to be nerfed further, do let me know.
